My Mother’s Tongue
A Theatre Performance

Five women gather to mourn.
Their mother died yesterday.
She, the one who sees the filth in her daughters:
“the lies hiding beneath their makeup, the dirt nesting in their sleek hair, the grime under their painted nails.”
She, their original guilt.
They destroy what remains of her memory.
They shatter what binds them to each other, to the body that birthed them, to the land, to the country.

تجتمعُ خمسُ نساءٍ في طقسِ حداد.
لقد توفّيت والدتهنّ البارحة.
هي، من ترى القذارة في بناتها:
“الكِزب المخبّى تحت ماكياجُن، الوسخ المعشّش بشعراتن المالسين، وضفيرن الملونين”.
هي، ذنبهنّ الأوّل.
يدمّرن ما تبقّى من ذكراها.
يفككن ما يربطهنّ ببعضهنّ، بالجسد الذي أنجبهنّ، بالأرض، بالوطن.
