On the 4th of August 2020 a devastating explosion hit the port of Beirut.

The direct impact and damage caused by the explosion reached as far as 10 km radius, resulting in hundreds of victims, thousands of injured and hundreds of thousands of displaced people, as well as the partial, and in many cases, complete destruction of houses and buildings in several neighborhoods of the city.

Zoukak's team members are safe; but our studio, located a couple of kilometers away, was seriously damaged.

This comes after a long year of uncertainty in Lebanon, resulting from a severe financial and political crisis, social unrest, a continuing popular uprising that began in October 2019, in addition to the Covid-19 pandemic and its various negative effects on all aspects of social life, physical and mental health, and economic stability.

In the absence of public support to culture, Lebanon's cultural sector is suffering greatly, multiple cultural venues are faced with the threat of closing down, a large number of cultural workers and artists are emigrating, and the means of production are drastically decreasing.

After 20 days from the terrible event, we still feel shocked, saddened and angry.

However, we know deep down that it is time to be here, to stay present and to act within the means and resources that are available to us, believing in the power of theatre as a medium and a space that leads to real change through reflection and positive confrontation.

We are, however, faced with serious financial challenges and are in need of support in order to rebuild our studio and continue our planned activities. In addition to continuing with our company’s artistic work, we hope to be able to host the work of various emerging and established artists, especially at a time when migration seems to be the only perspective. We also aim to support collectives from the civil society, working directly on the ground, and to provide a hub for direct relief and psycho-social support for victims.
