Anatomy Titus: Fall of Rome.
A Shakespeare Commentary

OVERVIEW

Heiner Müller was only supposed to make a translation of Shakespeare’s early work Titus Andronicus… but that is not how things worked out: the bloody revenge tragedy offered the creative mind a rich depository of associations and he was not able to resist. He created his own work from the basic material of Titus Andronicus, which received its world premiere in Bochum in 1985: “Anatomie Titus: Fall of Rome. Ein Shakespearekommentar”. Heiner Müller works with Shakespeare’s legacy here in a decidedly free and associative manner; he dissects the true anatomy of the Roman tragedy. The fragmentary and collage-like nature underscores the archaic cruelty of the struggle for power and the senselessness of the “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” principle of the current era.
