Synopsis:
As an artist who was born and lived through the civil war in Lebanon (the generation of the seventies or eighties) and witnessed it, I felt the necessity of giving this testimony. The idea of investigating the assassination of my grandfather, the Lebanese thinker and philosopher Hussein Mroue in 1987 (in the apartment we lived in years after his assassination) was the starting point. It was necessary to recreate the facts of the crime in an artistic and physical way in order to restore the memory of this event, for which no criminal investigation was conducted, and no trace was left of it.
How can my body, as a performer, acquire documentary value and bear witness to a crime that left no trace?
The performance Si Vis Pacem, If You Want Peace... constitutes the practical part of the thesis on the basis of which I received my PhD in February 2022 under the title: "The Body as Document, An Investigation into an Event of the Civil War".
This work challenges the political and judicial amnesia in Lebanon, and proves that art helps us find the truth, but also invents other possible truths. Art helps us resist.
