The audio version of "Heavens" will be broadcasted on Howlround as part of GLOD sessions organised by BEZNA Theatre Company, a series of performances and discussions about political theatre. The broadcast of Heavens will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Nicco Vacari, founder of BEZNA theatre company, with British playwright Chris Thorpe and Zoukak founding members Junaid Sariedeen (Theatre director, actor and dramaturge) and Maya Zbib ( theatre writer, actor and director).
The panelists will discuss the problematic raised within the play, addressing the individual’s relationship and responsibility towards major events in history, covering questions about the relation between theatre, history and collective memory, as well as Zoukak's methodology of work within the political theatre context. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session, open to the public.
‘’Heavens’’ was created by Zoukak Theatre Company in 2014, as a result of a two-year cycle of research around Lebanon’s history. The play is performed by a chorus of women and addresses the subject of loss, the absence and presence of individuals in relation to historical events, and what remains in the personal and collective memory/ies of citizens.
In this work, we come to a self-realization as individuals. We have become what we lost and we have lost what we have become. Our history has reduced us to numbers that fuel a destructive controversy. We challenge that which paralyses us and denies us a future. Between the here and the there, the now and the then, recollecting our memories and our losses. On stage, we stand so we could see, we speak so we could hear, we tell our stories so we could realize ourselves."
