Zoukak Studio was established in 2008, first and foremost as a meeting point, a place where professional artists and interested audiences can gather to discuss work and processes of creation. The space serves as an open access rehearsal studio for local practitioners, a space for research and artistic creation and a platform to share works in progress with audiences, allowing them to have an insight on new performance work in all its stages and enabling the artists to confront their work while creating it. It is also a space for sharing skills and knowhow between artists. Zoukak Studio hosts international artists in residence and the company facilitates workshops, talks, performances and seminars by artists in the studio, as part of the company’s aim to create networks and to facilitate encounters between local and international artists of varying practices. This sustains our aim of developing a dialogue of exchange and sharing of experiences, in order to spur dynamic interactions between artists and audiences, and to provide local practitioners with a space to experiment.
So far the studio has hosted over forty artists in residence from across the world, who have presented their work, given workshops and open talks; there have been regular dance and theatre classes for children, teenagers and adults in the studio, led by Zoukak members and by local theater-makers; as well as drama therapy workshops with beneficiaries of Kafa's program against domestic violence; and several performances and open studio presentations of the company's work, the studio has also served as a rehearsal space for over thirty theater and dance productions in Lebanon.
